I experienced several things this weekend that were beneficial for my writing career and I'd like to share them with you. If you're not a writer, you still might find something of help here, so I encourage you to keep reading.
First, last week at Shirley Jump's (http://shirleyjump.com/dynamic/default.aspx -- she's a terrific romance writer!) writing club meeting in Ft Wayne, another writer shared that she had signed up for Jack Canfield's email newsletter called Success Strategies (http://www.jackcanfield.com/). This is one of the men who started Chicken Soup for the Soul products. I went to the site and read in the newsletter that he was offering readers the chance to listen to an upcoming motivational teleconference. I signed and up and am glad I took the time on Fri night to call in and hear what he had to say to encourage listeners to increase their self-esteem, creativity, and output.
It was an hour long and, best of all -- FREE! I encourage you to sign up for this ezine and heed the advice Mr Canfield provides free of charge. I also plan to read his book, The Principles of Success.
I like Chicken Soup books. I've bought several for friends as gifts. Chicken Soup for the Soul even published one of my stories January 2006. My as-told-to story, "A Purpose in Death" was published in Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul 2. This provided the opportunity for me to be interviewed on three different radio broadcasts. NPR even asked me to read my story on the air! (My website lists other books with my stories in them: www.KayleenR.com).
Getting back to the teleconference: I encourage you to take advantage of free opportunities to learn from the Masters. Mr Canfield has been around a long time and gives motivational speeches around the world every year. He also offers learning opps that cost $$ which he describes on his website. If you have the chance to embark on one of these adventures, write to me and let me know how it benefited you and/or what you learned. They are not all for writers, but could pertain to many types of people who want to get ahead in their lives, either career-wise or personally.
Tomorrow I'll share a financial benefit to me that came from listening to Mr Canfield. I'll also report on the cold reading I participated in on Sunday night as a playwright with a playwriting workshop I joined in January. It's my first play and having trained actors read my dialogue and comment on it felt like sending my first child to Kindergarten -- scary but exciting!
